In this series we interview people from across our business to share their experience of working with us and what makes them tick. This month, we interview James Powell, Practice Accountant at Comera Professional.
How would you describe your role at Comera Professional?
I help businesses prepare their financial documents and provide advice on matters related to the “money” side of their organisation. This can be routine things like preparing their annual accounts, but it also includes helping put together budgets and forecasts, writing applications for funding, and advising on tax-efficient company structures.
What’s your favourite part of your role?
Any time we help a company claim for money, such as a successful funding application, or when they’re eligible for a tax credit but aren’t sure how to claim it. We work mostly with small, owner-managed businesses so it’s very satisfying knowing that money is making a difference to someone’s company.
If you had to describe yourself in 3 words, what would they be?
Detailed, honest, helpful
What do you enjoy about working at Comera?
The variety of clients we work with and the different types of work we do for them keeps each day interesting. And the people I work with here are great, I’m excited to be able to see everyone properly again!
What advice would you give to someone else looking to become an accountant and what path did you take to getting here?
I went through a graduate scheme to qualify as a Chartered Accountant at KPMG, before leaving to join Comera after receiving my Chartered status. Most people join graduate schemes straight or shortly after finishing university, but I was 29 when I applied so my advice is don’t give up! If you want to change careers and enter the finance world then it’s never too late.
We’ve all been working from home a lot more lately. What’s your ‘home office’ hack?
Try and keep your “work” space separate from your “living” space if you can, it makes it easier to get into the right frame of mind at the start of the day and switch it off when it’s time to finish. Also be aware of pets! My dog has tried to loudly join in on a number of client calls in the last year…
If you had to share your ‘secret to success’, what would it be?
Keep trying and never stop learning. Nobody can know everything, but if you focus, it’s possible to know quite a lot!
